Three weeks ago, I applied for a new job. One week ago, I had an interview for that job. My two references were called this week. SO, I am hoping that I will have a job offer this week for a new position that would allow me to work from home full-time starting in the new year.
Over the last few weeks, I have felt a huge sense of sadness at the thought of leaving my current job. While the 4 hour per day commute has been exhausting, it has felt good to work, once again, for a progressive organization that aims to improve the community for people from all walks of life. It has felt good to have a Supervisor to collaborate with, a Manager who likes to talk about politics, and a Director who provides positive feedback. I have felt like a valued member of a team that does important work.
But I have also felt myself longing for an end to my daily commutes. Four days per week, I jump out of bed at 6:15, scramble out the door at 6:50 to catch the 7:15 train in Burlington, which gets me into Toronto by 8:15. I walk up the hill, grab a coffee, and get into my office by 9:00 am. Four days per week, I leave my home by 7:00 am and get home by 7:00 pm. One day a week, I work from home, which feels like heaven. So, I am spending 16 hours per week commuting to my job; 8 hours on a train; 4 hours in a car; and 4 hours walking. So, if I get this new position, I will have 16 hours a week that are currently lost to commuting!!! I can have my life back!!
So, this has me dreaming about what would I do with 16 extra hours per week? Here is my list:
- Join a club to work out 3 days per week;
- Take an art class in acrylic painting;
- Take a meditation class;
- Write a blog, once per week, instead of once per month, for my non-profit organization;
- Walk in the Conservation area 4 days per week.
What would you do with 16 extra hours per week???

Here’s to getting your Life Back Kim…. I cannot even begin to imagine what 4 hrs commuting would be like then working … I travel half hour in my car to work… leave home at 7am to get to work for 7-30am….. and do a straight 7and half hour shift support work… sometimes I do afternoons 3 until 10-30 with a sleep in.. end of shift 7 30 next morning… I think you will be fine :-) … Embrace the changes…. and know we are all of us being guided to shape our lives to be in the right place right now.. :-) xxx
Thanks Sue…The job was offered to me today. I will make less money, have fewer benefits, less job security, BUT I can hardly wait!!! I will start on Jan 7th; a very nice way to start the new year!!
Excellent Kim… and it will give you a good breathing space in which to relax a little and chill out more…xx
Job! It’s like a treasure hunt when it comes to job. I had just finished my study and finding a job is like finding a needle in haystack. Thought of working from home but have no idea on what. :P Congrats on your job.
Thanks….and good luck to you. Finding the first one after school is always the toughest…Kim
